A Tale of Two Runs
Both runs were started with transport out to the starting point. For S2H3 it was the grumpier than usual boatman from the Port, for BMH3 it was two of Teerachai's old baht buses dragged out of retirement from his Nontaburi songtaew fleet. For S2H3 we travelled down the picturesque Choa Praya and were dropped of at the marina-that-never-was and ran along the klong paths, lanes and road of Prapadeang to Wat Bang Num Peung Nok to get the boat back. This return dusk boat ride was especially enjoyed by the self named Victory as in her 30-something years she had never seen that part of Bangkok from the river. During the trip down Noriega was seen fiddling with a dog's, equipment. "He's got a hard-on and it's bigger than mine" he remarked. I only mention this as, at a certain run on Saturday, Noriega was given a down-down for reaching into the front of Pussy Virus' sarong to demonstrate how in Burma one can masturbate secretly in public
The groaning two pickups for BMH3 drove us past the dusty Ratana Thibet road works down Rachapruek and dropped us off at Wat Bang Ra Hong to run through the orchards, over hidden disused bridges and along laterite roads of Nontaburi back to the hash bridge via Wat Sai Ma Tai. I use the term run loosely here as one or two hashers, well OK only one, decided to forgo exercising his legs to get back quicker so as to exercising his right arm. In fact one of the reasons he considered for using mechanised transport was that it facilitates drinking on the trail, which is difficult when actually running. Those of you actually bothering to read this will no doubt recognise the exploits of this wispy hair schemer. On Sunday the main culprit of run shortening was Genghis and his entourage who short-cutted to another pier and took a separate boat back, for a similar reason.
Although there may be similarities here, that is where it ends. BMH3 run was laid with paper ever 30m or so with extra at places with intentional direction changes, easy to follow except of course at checks. S2H3 was set with flour and chalk every …well…100m to 200mā0m… sometimes. Checks were well marked at places where there was a choice of 2 potential trails but at other places with 4 or 5 choices there was nothing…..no marks, no ccheck just …nothing. Whilst On On was heard on BMH3, thee cry heard most on S2H3 was "where's the f***ing marks" or "are you". I suppose the hares' styles were just different. Teerachai followed the - mark the trail clearly when the pack is On and screw them when they are not - school of thought, while Lecherous obviously comes from the school of - I'll on put marks sparingly and have the frustrated pack run around in circles not knowing whether there are On at all. One of the highlights of Sundays run enjoyed by Sugar Daddy and Stumbles was playing "Spot the mark" with commentary as to the quality, direction, placing and relevance of each individual mark. The hard copy version of The Observer's Book of Marks will be at Asia books soon. Their other highlight was greeting Ajarn Khee Moa every time he ran past them muttering about marks.
Sundays circle was usurped by Bushman as acting RA and too many down downs were given to recall them all. Bushman seemed intent on awarding himself multiple down downs muttering some thing about returning to Norway where beer is expensive . Muff Diver seemed to be the target for most other down downs. At one point he was seen stood on an ice chest sporting the latest accessory from the Middle Eastern division of Yamaha, which apparently made him look like a latter-day Moshe Dyan. The famous motorcy manufacturer is rumoured to be changing its name in the Middle East to Yamaka and the three tuning forks in the logo being replaced with three Jew's harps. This idea is being floated by their new marketing team lead by Noriega. Another marketing coup by Noriega is a chain of Middle Eastern bespoke clothiers called Sinbad the Tailor.
Apparently there were two On On On's for Sunday's run. One being the official Chinese Restaurant on Soi 41 and the other being an impromptu gathering at an Italian restaurant near the infamous Malaysia Hotel. I didn't attend either as according to Noriega I was sick!!
Mondays circle was held under the construction floodlights of the hash bridge. There again too many down-downs to recall but a few come to mind. Frisky for wearing a 25th Anniversary shirt when she didn't actually show up on the day (advantage of being hash haberdasher). One to the father and daughter duo of 4x2 and ????. Four others, including Frisky again, for wearing matching shirts. The visitor called Bagus or Baghoose, for having a bald head that looked like the business end of a male (well you get the idea), Beefeater didn't really think Bagus was a hasher but was in fact the famous Italian World Cup referee bought in at great expense to mediate between Normal and Crash who had both set up opposing nibbles tables. Your choice was dog biscuits or communion wafers with tuna dip, or slimming rice cakes with tangy chilli dip. The latter, as observed by Love Canal, were excellent for discouraging the local dogs from scrounging. POW went to the hare The Pink Panther for marking the trail with the letters BH3, well he is an ex-GM of the OFAG hash. Mondays On On On was supervised by the nodding Bug in the hare's absence. The hare said he had another party to go to. Hmmm. Wonder if that was to include his pre-party trick of dropping the cake in the ditch? Jumpstart entertained us with Karaoke, thankfully quietly, while Spinning Dwarf interspersed discussion about hash axioms with heavy eyed impressions of the Bug.
