Run:- 1255                  Date:- 9 April 2007.
Location:- Unfinished bridge, Outer Ring Road
Hare:- 4x2
Scribe:- 4x2

A hare's perspective. One of the advantages of laying a run in the dry season is that all paths are open and there is no flooding. The disadvantages are the heat, the lack of cover in some places and horrible dirty burned out rice fields. Eat Me and I know the area very well, it is near to my work and sorry, 50km to reccie the other side of hash bridge is just a bridge too far. The unfinished bridge itself is unique in that it is breezy with pleasant views of the east of Bangkok. Unfortunately one also have to deal with a collection of relatively unpleasant drunken Thai youths who use the area as a racing track and a place to hold drinking and bottle breaking competitions.

Eat Me and I went for a reccie late Sunday afternoon to work out the beginning of the run. I have hared a few runs from the bridge and attempt to do something different every time. We found a few paths through banana plantations skirting paddy fields that we had not used before, a new false trail and a new big loop for the first part of the run. We also came across a new potential ONONON venue, "Homestay Krungthep Klang Na" at a lovely location, as its name suggests in the middle of rice fields. A quick pop in, a look at the menu and a chat with the owner and we decided to ditch the "Secret Garden" restaurant on the service road and go for a new secret garden.

When we laid the run, the klongs were quite busy. This area still has a lot of water transportation and there are several great photo ops. The area is very Muslim; the villagers are house proud and extremely friendly. It rained in the afternoon so using flour was a dangerous option. By the time we laid the trail there was no rain, which held off all evening.

The first two kilometres was designed to bring the pack back to almost where they started. This worked well because latecomers Sugar Daddy and George of the Jungle caught up with the pack at the bottom of the approach to the bridge on Klong Tap Chang Bon . The trail continued up the klong path with a check at the arch bridge that Noriega has used in the past for a run site. From the viewpoint at the top of the unfinished bridge, the hares can observe activity at some of the checks up to almost 1km away. It is always amusing to see people running in the wrong direction. We then took the pack up Klong Lat Bua Khao and into the large rice field complex. Last time we laid a run in that area you could not get into the fields without wading thigh deep in water. Today, the path was clear, and it was easy to put several loops and checks in the large field making a big loop back through a friendly local's back garden and onto the klong. The old lady likes us running through her garden because we always take her a couple of bottles of M150 and stop for a chat. Then finally a straight run back to the bridge for the last 500m.

Your On Sec Canal Rapee was the first back in 50 minutes. Unlike Canal Rapee's "dry" metabolism (look at his hair, it remains perfectly in order even after a hot run) most hashers get sticky and horrible after an hour in the heat. As a hare, this makes picking at nibbles difficult as every two minutes you will be greeted and thanked with the phrase "good run" (whether it was good or not) and your hand will be shaken by a hasher's very hot and slimy paw.

We spent the last weekend in Chiang Mai and brought back a selection of northern and Vietnamese snacks from the market. Normal brought along even more food and the lot was devoured. Was there going to be any room in people's bellies for the ononon?

Bog was in charge of the circle, which went well. I have no recollection of most of the offenses. One that does spring to mind was my friend Skidmark, the Chiang Mai Hash Cash who brought the burning rice field pollution with him from the north. Half way through the circle our On Sec asked me to find a scribe. I didn't, so this is the result.

The ononon was a shoes off, sit on cushions affair. Love Canal compared it to being on Ko Chang, Bog complained of not being able to sit at a proper table but it was a delightful location and the food was very good. As usual, we solved the mysteries of the universe, played with the house kittens and kept on ordering more beer. Many people stayed on quite late with the last few leaving just before 11PM. I though it was a good hash, but then I am biased. Next time I will find a real scribe.
