Run:- 1289 Date:- 3 December 2007.
Location:- Assumption University, Ramkamhaeng
Hare:- Ian "AKM" S
Scribe:- Steve "Tastes Great" FI guess a lot of people heard that AKM was setting the run because so few people showed up. Ha! Even fewer actually did the run (more on that later). But a run there was none-the-less, and for the small group that turned out it was an enjoyable evening, even as the new Çanal Rapeé administration tries to find its pace. The run started out as most do, with the pack milling about the starting point waiting for something to happen. The Gestapo-like approach of the Hash Cash showed it's ugly face when I tried to get the 30 baht parking fee included in my run fee. Nein! was the short reply. I knew we were somewhere close to Rama IX when Kim Normal came peddling up on bicycle. The image of poor Toto being peddled off to certain doom came to mind.
As we headed towards the massive stadium I thought to myself, 'Wow, now I really feel like an athlete' until of course we found ourselves surrounded by hundreds, if not thousands of real athletes playing football, badminton, volleyball, any number of other sports. Is it just me, or does anyone else get totally confused when hash runs overlap with normal jogging sites? Everywhere you look you see someone running in some direction. That phenomena, along with the general stupidity of the hash, had us running around that stadium for about 15 minutes before we found the on-on and headed across and then out of the Sports Authority grounds. I believe it's there where we lost about half the pack. Seems that meandering around the sports ground was preferable to actually running on the trail. No sooner than we hit the street when we were back cutting across the Ramkamhaeng campus where the scenery improved dramatically. What is it about college campuses (campii?)? Oh yeah, it's all those young people. Anyway, the trail meandered through the buildings, parking lots, study halls, and eateries until we emerged on Soi 24 where we promptly lost the rest of the pack. The stadium looming in the near background must have been too much to resist and they all headed straight back. Only a few members of the "hash that will remain nameless", and a couple of honorary members soldiered on. Surrender is not an option!
From that point we had about 5k of good hash running. Klong paths, false trails, tricky checks--the works. Somewhere in the middle we lost another runner and were down the brave group of four that actually finished the run (Kudos to Beefeater, Noriega, Button Fly, and yours truly). We eventually made our way around and back onto the ABAC campus where the scenery once again picked up. The place was a beehive of activity - basketball games (I was sorely tempted to stay and play), concerts, crowds, etc. And the trail ran right through them. A few shapely students tried to hijack Ajarn Beefeater (he was sorely tempted to stay and play) but he stayed true to the task at hand. Another couple hundred meters down the road and we were on in to the car park where we found a bigger group than was there when we left. It seemed that a few people (our illustrious GM being one of them) decided to show up too late to actually do the run.
The circle was, as mentioned earlier, another step in the coming of age of our new committee. Practice makes perfect, as they say. Highlights included the two co-hares being charged repeatedly, mostly because their presence in the circle was infinitely preferable to the hare's and his phallus. Various and sundry charges including Hugo Chavez for failing to make inroads against truth, justice, and the American way, which continues to be staunchly defended by the CNNIA. I can't say anything about the on-on-on because I couldn't go, but I can say it was an excellent run and more people should have done it.
On on to next week at Rachapruek Rd. just north of the Rama IV turnoff!
